where it all starts · the financial satnav

There’s a size of business where your income stops depending on you working. Find out what yours is.

Today’s business pays today’s bills. The Financial SatNav shows you what size it needs to be to keep paying them after you stop, and the quickest of three routes to get there.

Free. Ten minutes with your own figures.
Runs inside Multipliable OS.

the problem

How most targets get set

Next year’s number usually comes from last year’s accounts.

A good year, and the plan is more of the same. A poor year, and the plan is to try harder. Either way the target is last year plus a bit, and the assumption underneath is that if the business keeps growing, one day there’ll be enough.

But 'enough' is never defined. So the business bounces around a ceiling, and every year is another year of busyness, paying for the life you have now, with the hope it's enough for the future.

Start at the other end

The SatNav works backwards. It starts with the income you’d want if work were optional, turns that into the Financial Moat you’d need behind you, and then shows what your business has to look like to build it.

Not one answer. Three.

what it shows

The three routes

Income. The business grows until it pays the life you want, every year, for as long as you run it. Most owners are on this road without knowing it. It works, right up until you want to stop.

Exit. Usually the quickest way to the Moat. It also asks for a growth rate most owners don’t yet believe is in them, and years of exit-specific work: processes documented, contracts tidied, accounts that stand up to a buyer.

Investment. The Moat without the sale. The business throws off a surplus, the surplus builds the Moat, and you’re sorted whether you sell or not. It can be a couple of years longer than the exit. It’s also a couple of years with no exit work, and the option to sell stays open the whole way.

Which one is right depends on your numbers, your growth, and how much of your life you want to spend getting a business ready for someone else. That’s why the SatNav runs all three, side by side, on your figures.

What you get

  • Your Lifestyle Number: the annual income you're actually aiming for
  • Your Financial Moat: the amount that means work is optional
  • Three routes, each with the size of business it needs, the growth rate, and the year it gets you there
  • Next year's revenue target, derived from your life rather than last year's accounts
  • A PDF route map you can keep, and re-run when things change

It takes about ten minutes. You’ll need a rough idea of your living costs and last year’s revenue, profit and overheads. Nothing has to be exact to be useful.
